JOHN  GUIDO (son of John Guido, Sr., in Italy) was born August 20, 1880 in Cosenza,  Calabria, Italy; immigrated from San Giovanni, Italy to America when he was just 14, settling in West Virginia.

John was 20 years old when he married the very young, 15 year old, VICTORIA LORITA FOLIO around 1900.  She was born December 20, 1885 in Italy, immigrated to America from Italy before John [in 1897] and is believed to have settled in West Virginia with her family also. Victoria's parents were PASQUALE LORATTO and wife, SERAFINO FOLIO LORATTO.

John's WWII Draft Registration Card:

1930 Census for John Guido:  Dunkard Avenue, Riverside, Monongalia County, WV, District 9

John (trackman for coal mine) and Victoria were 57 and 45 years of age, respectively.  The age at first marriage was listed as 20 for John and 15 for Victoria (yet their ages were more than 5 years apart; was John married before?).  Both were born in Italy to Italian-born parents.  Their children listed are Patsy (gatherer for a glassworks) age 19, Louis (trackman for coal mine) 17, Teresa 14, Rose 13, Frank 11, Tony 9 and Ettore 7.  All the children are listed as born in WV.  Next door is their son, Salvatore Guido (trackman for coal mine) age 24 with his wife, Helen, age 10.  They have two small children John and Elsie G.  Helen is from Czechoslovakia.   John and Salvatore rent their homes, do not own a radio set and do not live on a farm.

Neither John nor Victoria became naturalized citizens, but both spoke English as well as Italian.   In 1930 they rented their home for $10/month in Riverside, WV.   At that time he worked as a Trackman for a coal mine.  He became a grocery store owner and they lived above the store.  Victoria was paralyzed in her later years.

John became a widower when his wife died on March 24, 1952 in Morgantown.  She died of Bronchopneumonia following a perforated gangrenous appendix with peritonitis.  Victoria suffered from other health  issues including hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis.  She was 66.   See:  My journal scribblings

Just a few months later, on June 29, 1952, John passed away from a coronary occlusion. He was 71.    John still had all his own teeth!  He was known to have loved fruit and to eat it daily!

Both died at Vincent Pallotti Hospital (See photo).  And both listed as having last residence of 427 Dunkard Avenue in Monongalia County, Morgantown, WV.

His visitation/funeral card shows that the services were held at Saint Theresa Catholic Church* on Wednesday, July 2, 1952 at 9 am.  Both are buried at Beverly Hills Memorial Park.  Victoria's services were also at St. Theresa's, held on March 27, 1952 at 2 pm, before Father Lawrence Sullivan.  She is interred with John. * St Theresa's Catholic Church, 44 Beechurst Ave, Morgantown, WV

Christine King is the great granddaughter of John and Victoria.  Through her mother's memories shared while Christine was growing up, she recalls that:

John always wore a pin-striped suit.

And, he always yelled at the kids for eating his grapes on his grapevine arbor.  He used the grapes to make wine.  He would cuss at them in Italian!

Also, family tradition speaks of a previous son born to John and Victoria who was named Antonio.  This first Antonio, also called Tony, was killed in the coal mines around age 13.  The Antonio listed below is named for the first one.

                                                                                       Thanks Christine!!

FRANCESCO "FRANKIE WILLS" GUIDO

FRANCESCO "FRANKIE WILLS" GUIDO was born April 12, 1918 in WV, and died July 30, 1980 in Maryland Park, Md.

Occupations: Coal mines,  Taxi Driver, Professional Boxer, Tile Setter

Boxing name: Frankie Wills
Boxed Golden Gloves - Place 2nd & 4th rank in world welterweight division
Won 1st place but not awarded because of World War II.
Ranked 4th in welterweight division in the world.
Is included in the Washington DC Sports Hall of Fame.

Started boxing at age 13 under John Zan. At age 17 won WV State Featherweight Championship. Then Lightweight and Welterweight. Lost only 7 of 128 amateur bouts and reversed 5 of those. Frankie joined his father in mines on 3rd shift after school. In 1937 he moved to Washington to live with his older brother "Lou".

Frankie could fight while moving backwards and had a beautiful hook. He had a punishing right. Sharp puncher. Not a real "banger" fighter. One problem was a lack of stamina from a lifelong throat condition that hampered his breathing. He was managed by Johnny Bowen. Trained at Glenn Drake's Apollo Gym. In 1942 his managers were Bo Bregman and Bob Hayden and Trainer was Billy Edwards. In 1943 he had NY fights. In 1944 he was the ranked 4th in the World Welterweight Division.  By 1947 he had 56 Professional Wins; 17 losses and 9 draws.

Died (approximate age 61; heart attack) at Pemlico Race Track, MD, having just held a winning ticket. It was a couple of days following his death that someone thought about the fact that his real name is Guido and next-of-kin should be notified and were. Prior to that, authorities, etc., recalled him as Frankie Wills only.
