(1) MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MARYLAND - Born 1810
SAMUEL CATOR & his wife, MARY A. CATOR + son SAMUEL H. CATOR

Samuel Cator, born in 1810, married Mary A. (last name unknown).

In the 1850 Montgomery County, Medley 3rd E District, Maryland Census, Samuel and Mary Cator are listed as follows:

Samuel Cator 40 [1810]  Blacksmith $750 MD
Mary A. Cator 36 [1814] -- -- MD Unable to read or write

In 1880 Census  Samuel is a Postmaster (although disabled) for the town of Poolesville, Montgomery County, MD, District 111.  He is listed as being 70 (b. 1810 in MD to parents who were likewise born in MD).  His wife, Mary A. Cator is shown as 67 (b. 1813 in MD to parents who were likewise born in MD), three years his junior.  Mary "keeps house" and is assisted by their "daughter"  Margaret "Maggie" E. Cator, age 25, born about 1855.   Their son Samuel H. Cator, age 29 [1851] is listed as a Blacksmith.

Samuel Cator 70 [1810] Postmaster Head Disabled
Mary A. Cator 67 [1813] Keeping House Wife
Samuel H. Cator 29 [1851] Blacksmith Son Single
Maggie E. Cator 25 [1855] Assists in House "Daughter"

On December 13, 1881, a Samuel H. Cator married a Margaret S. Moulden in Montgomery County, MD.  This Samuel is likely the son of Mary and Samuel above.  In the 1870 Census, Margaret S. Moulden is listed as follows.  As of 1881, this Margaret S. would be 30 years old.

1870 Census for Montgomery County, Dist. 3 MD, listing Margaret S. Moulden:

"SAMUEL"

In the 1850  MD Dorchester County, Div 3 Census taken on 5 Sept 1850 lists a young Samuel born in 1841:

Emila Travers 30 (born 1820 MD).

Per the 1870 MD Census, SAML H. CATOR, age 29 was a Blacksmith.
It is likely that Maggie E. Cator is daughter of Samuel and Mary Ann Cator, above.

(3)  DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -  Born 1871
SAMUEL H. CATOR & his wife, MINNIE SOHL CATOR

SAMUEL H. CATOR (born 1871) married MINNIE SOHL (born 1869) in Washington DC area sometime after 1900.  Minnie Sohl Cator was the daughter of Christian Augustus and Sabina Fleck Sohl, who came from Hassen Cassel, Germany and lived in the DC area from the 1860s forward.  Christian and Sabina Sohl had 5 children listed on the 1880 census:  Lillie (b. 1862 DC), Johanna (b. 1864 DC), Henry (b. 1868 DC), Minnie (1869 DC), and Frank (b. Dec 1871).

1880 Census for DC:

Minnie married Samuel H. Cator.  Their son Ralph E. Cator was born October 15,  1897, but Minnie is listed in the 1900 Census as living with her mother Sabina and Minnie is noted as "Single"  PLUS no Ralph is listed as living in the household.

1900 Census for DC:

Only known child of SAMUEL and MINNIE SOHL CATOR
or a first Mrs. Cator nee FNU Zeller:

RALPH "C" CATOR* was born about 1897 as he is listed in the 1910 DC Census as age 13.  Minnie and Samuel had been married only 9 years.  His dad, Samuel H. Cator is a carpenter.  Samuel's parents both were born in Maryland, as was Samuel.   Grandmother Sabina  lived with her daughter Minnie and Minnie's husband, Samuel Cator, in 1910, when Sabina was 79 years old.  Minnie died in 1952.  Likely buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

I found the following in the Washington Post (Nov. 18, 1894) which states that this Samuel H., Cator was married to Josephine A. Zeller prior to marrying Minnie Sohl:

Samuel's wife, Josephine Zeller Cator, was living with her mother, Sarah, on Brandywine Avenue in Brightwood in March 1900.  She was arrested for petit larceny from her employer:

JOSEPHINE CATOR: WASH. POST, MARCH 5, 1900

1900 Census, taken on 4th and 5th day of June, for Brandywine St., DC - Sarah Zeller
Shows Ralph, grandson, as born in October 1896!

The following article in the Post in 1900 seems to clarify this issue of who was Ralph Emory Cator's mother:    Samuel H. Cator was first married to Josephine  Zeller, daughter of Sarah Zeller, who died October 8th 1900.  Samuel and Josephine married in 1894 and Ralph was born in 1897.  Samuel and Josephine did not live together after 1898 when Ralph was two years old and Ralph was now 4 years old.  It therefore appears that Ralph Emory Cator is Minnie's stepson.

Halloween 1900 in the Washington Post:

1910 Census for DC:

Per the 1918 Washington D.C. Boyd's DirectoryRalph "E." Cator is an Electrician residing at 56 Florida Avenue, NW where Samuel H. Cator, Carpenter,  is also listed as residing.

Cator died in Buncombe County, NC, at the age of 44.  Death date is given as 26 May 1941

Per the 1920 DC Census, Ralph E. Cator, son, is living with his parents at 126 V Street, NW in DC..  He was born in DC to his Maryland-born father and DC-born mother (German ancestry).  Ralph is an electrician working for a contractor.  Samuel H. is a carpenter working for a construction company.
