DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS AND SARAH CATOR

Generation No. 1  (To see photos of Cators, CLICK HERE)

THOMAS CATOR was born about 1834, and died 1912. He married SARAH E. __________ (unknown).  These graves are located at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church,  Temple Hills, Maryland.  Sarah E. Cator, born abt. 1843, died October 5, 1891 at age 48 years; 21 years prior to Thomas' death.  In 1870 (July 10th)  he and his family (Sarah, James H or W., Charles C., and Mary E.) were living in Forestville, MD per the Census.   In the 1870 Census, it is noted that Sarah E. is unable to write, but can read.   Note:  Thomas is believed to have been a fort builder for the union army.

Children of Thomas Cator and Sarah (unknown last name) are:
1)  JAMES W. or H. CATOR, age 9 in 1870, b. abt 1861 MD, attending school.  (Note:  In the 1880 Census, James does not appear as living with him parents; he would be 19).
2)  CHARLES CONRAD CATOR, SR., b. 1863; d. 1943, Washington DC.# (Note:  In the 1880 Census, Charles does not appear as living with him parents; he would be 17).

# Living next door to the Cator family in 1870 Census is Frederick Conradt, age 44, a farmer who was born in "Wurstenburg", with his wife Mary E. and 2 children.  Is Charles Conrad Cator's middle name is some honor to the Conradt family??

3)  Mary E. Cator, b. about 1867.  Age 3 in 1870 Census. (This may be the "Mary E. Cator" born about 1863 listed in 1870 Census as 3 years old).   In the 1880 Census, Mary E would only be 13, but she is no longer listed as living with her parents).

1870 Census:

In 1880 Census, Thomas and Sarah E Cator are still together, but their sons Charles Conrad Cator, Sr., is no longer living at the home (he is now age 19 approximately).  James W. or H. Cator may well be "William Cator" who is now 18 (about 1862 in Maryland).  Mary E, who would be 13 is not listed.  Could this be Mary ELLA Cator who is listed as "adopted daughter".

*Also, in 1910, a Thomas Cator is listed as living at  2306 Champlain Ave, DC as "Head", 73 years of age (b. abt. 1837) and a widow; he works as a carpenter at a lumber mill; rents house; and lives with his daughter Maggie (Cator) Coates (35, born 1875; married 12 yrs) and granddaughters Helen (12) and Irma (7) CoatesIs this our Thomas Cator too?

(Cator) Suit born April 1876 (24 years old in 1900) and their daughter, his granddaughter Elsie Suit born January 1899 in Maryland.  Is this our Thomas Cator?

(same street that William and Charity Cator are living on in 1900).

Charles C. Cator, Jr. is our paternal direct line.

Charles Cator, Head, born May 1863, age 37, born MD to MD parents; married 2 years to 2nd wife:
Lurania Cator, born April 1876, age 24.  No children from this marriage.
Mabel Cator, Daughter of SARAH F. CATOR, born May 1893,  age 7, born in DC of MD parents.
Charles Cator, Jr., Son of SARAH F. CATOR, born Feb "1896" (instead of 1895), age 4,  ".
Joseph Clifton, Nephew in Law, born Aug 1876 (age 23) works as a milk driver.
It seems that Charles Cator, Sr., was working in 1900 at the Navy Yard.  (Census difficult to read).

1900:  DC Wash. City 10 Dist Census: June 4, 1900; Series: T623  Roll: 158   Page: 219

Ruth Ridgeway is our maternal direct line.
They reside on 28 Grant Street in DC.  Ida (Willett) is the stepdaughter of Philip Martin and his wife Laura.  Ida married Henry Ridgeway and she and her husband of 5 years lived with Philip and Laura at 28 Grant Street in DC in 1900.  Ida and Henry had three daughters at that time - Ruth (our line born March 1896), Elvie (born March 1898), and infant Marion (born Dec 1899).  Philip Martin and  Henry Ridgeway both worked as day laborers.

NOTE:  Laura Willet married Philip Martin after the 1880 Census (she married Philip about 1882).  In the 1880 Census for Middleton, Charles County, Maryland, (FHL Film 1254508, NA Film T9-0508), Laura is the Head of Household (her husband ____ Willett must be deceased or they are divorced).    1880 MD Census:

Laura WILLET   Self   W   Female   W   25   MD      MD   MD

Walter H. COOMS   Cousin   S   Male   W   20   MD      MD   MD

It is interesting to note in an article in the Washington Post on August 12, 1895, that Laura Willet Martin's son, William A. Willett, Ida's older brother, evidently detested his step-father for whatever reason and was violent toward him.  Other than the following article, no information is known of this relationship:

1910 Census ED 93, Washington, DC, T624, 151, Part 3, Page 175A; 713 G Street, DC

Charles C. Cator, Jr. is our paternal direct line.
Charles and Lurania Cator (not Cater) lived at 713 G Street, DC with their son, Charles C. Cator, Jr., and daughter, Mabel E. Cator.  Charlie Jr. was 14 and his sister Mabel was about two years older (16).  Both single.  Also living in the house is "boarder" Thomas Cater (Cator) age 75.  This is Charles Cator Sr's father!  Charles Jr is listed as being born in Washington DC (instead of Maryland).  His parents (Charles Sr. and Lurania, stepmother) were born in Maryland, as was his sister Mabel and grandfather Thomas.  Lurania and Charles Sr. had no children born to them.  Charles Sr. was listed as a "furnaceman" for the "Navy Yard".  Thomas listed as having "own income."

1910 Census Washington, DC, ED 42; Series: T624  Roll: 150   Page: 136

Ruth Ridgeway is our maternal direct line.
By 1910 Henry R. and Francis I. Ridgeway have been married 14 years and are living independently on 19th Street between E and F Streets/Aves in DC.  And they have added two more children, Ethel M. and Mary A. Ridgeway.  Our Ruth is now 14 years of age. Henry is now occupied as a foreman in the  ironwork field.   Marion, Ethel and Mary were born in DC, all others in Maryland, to Maryland born parents.

February 28, 1915  Washington Post:  This is likely Ida Willett Ridgeway's new husband,
James W. Thompson:

August 8, 1915 Washington Post:

Charlie Jr would go drinking with his father, Charles Sr. and would drive them home with Charles Sr saying "Watch it!" at every intersection.  At one such intersection, someone hit their vehicle and Charles Sr said to his son, "G__ D___ It!  I told you to watch it!!

See below for 1920 census listing Ruth and Charlie, Jr. as married....

Generation No. 3

CHARLES CONRAD

(CHARLES CONRAD2, THOMAS1) was born 1895 in
Silver Hill, Md., and died 1987 in Va.  He is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, MD.

He married:  (1) RUTH RIDGEWAY before 1915, dau. of Henry Ridgeway & Ida Willett (Martin). Ruth was born March 1896.  He married:  (2) FLORENCE BEATRICE O'TOOLE

Washington Post March 8, 1913:

Interestingly, I have found another article on Charles C. Cator,
who is likely this same Cator now married to Ruth Ridgeway Cator:

Washington Post March 8, 1913:

Boarding with them were Russell DeYankin(?) and George D. Fowler.
Ruth worked as a cashier at the movie theater and Charlie worked as a Dispatcher for the Railroad.

Charlie and Ruth divorced and ultimately Ruth married Lodger, George D. Fowler.
Charlie remarried also, to Florence B. O'Toole:

Charles is an electrician; no other members of the family worked.
Interesting that Florence B. "O'Toole" Cator lists her parents as merely born in the "United States."
Florence & Charles are the direct line parents of Jessamine (Jerri), Dorothy, and Cora Cator.
