MARY EMILY CATOR married JOHN PRATHER June 2, 1856 in Prince George's County, MD (one of the primary locations of "Our Cators".)

Mary Emily Cator was born January 1837 in Maryland.  

John R. Prather was born June 1833 in Washington, DC. 

On June 2nd, 1856, Mary Emily Cator married John R. Prather in the same county.  Mary Emily was 19.  John R. was 23.

John R. Prather is 47 years old and works as a carpenter. He was born in DC to a DC born father and a MD born mother.  All others are born in MD to MD born parents.
His wife Mary E. is 40 (?) years old and keeps house. 
Their children are: Edward M. (23 b. 1857) Richard F.(21), Elizabeth V (18; married a Magnum), Francis C, a son (9), Susan E (7), William Platt (4; born 17 Jan. 1877; died 17 Jan 1899), Lethia A. (infant).  A daughter Edith Prather was born later.

Susan E. is actually Emma Susan PRATHER.

1900 Census for NOTTINGHAM, PGC, MD.  John is a carpenter born to Maryland born parents according to this census.  John and Mary have been married for 43 years and of their 9 children, only 6 are still living.  Only daughter Edeth (Edith) remains living at home; single and age 19, born January 1881

John R. Prather, a farmer,  is now 75 and has been married 53 years to his 73 year old wife, Mary E., who gave birth to 9 children, 6 of whom are still living.  Their daughter Edith E. Grimes is living with them and has been married for 6 years.  Her husband Mordacai R. is 33 and works at a grocery store. They had 3 children, only 2 of whom have survived, Mary M. who is 4 and Emma V. who is 2. 

Both Mary and John died SOMETIME after 1910 in Prince George's County, Maryland.


Their son William Pratt Prather died at age 22 in 1899.

Their son Richard T. Prather was born in 1859 and died in 1942 at age 83.  Buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland MD.  Married Elizabeth LNU in 1888 and had two known sons, Richard E. and John Warren and one known daughter, Mabel E. Prather.



daughter EMMA SUSAN PRATHER  m. john luther jones on April 28, 1897 in DC.  They are both buried at Congressional Cemetery at Site R110/201.  Emma died April 24, 1972.  John died 10 years earlier on June 14, 1962.  Emma Susan Prather was born in 1872 in Nottingham, MD. She lived to be age 100 in the year 1972;  she died at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Washington, DC. Her husband John Luther Jones was born in MD also.  Their children were all born in DC.  John in 1920 was a oiler as a steelworker.  Susan worked as a saleswoman in a department store.

1910 Census for Washington DC, V St. SE. According to this, Susan has 4 children, only 2 are living.   John is working as a bell porter. Other children of John and Emma were Judith (deceased); Irene E. Jones, b. 1915.  There also was a daughter Catherine "Katie" Virginia (Deceased) who died at about 5 yr. Katie may be buried at Andrews Air Force Base.

John L. Jones was 50 in 1920 and his wife was 47.  Children listed are son, Elsworth W. age 19; Vangie age 13; Irene age 5.  Also living with them is Catherine McDaniel, who is listed as John's "mother" who is a widow at age 72.  John and Emma were born in MD.  The children born in DC.

John is 60.  Their daughter Irene is living with them, as is his mom.

Elsworth W. , born 1901, was an apprentice machinist in 1920 and eventually married MAUDE LNU, but they had no children. 

Vangie E. Jones, b. 1907, married Jack Stanton;  d. 1967;  Jack and Vangie had a daughter Mae Viola Elizabeth Jones. 


daughter Edith "Edie" Prather (born 1881) m. Mordecai  RIDGEWAY Grimes (BORN JULY 7, 1876)

When Edith "Edie" Prather was born in January 1881 in Maryland, her father, John, was 47 and her mother, Mary, was 44. She had two sons and four daughters with Mordecai Ridgeway Grimes between 1906 and 1921. She had four brothers and four sisters. In 1900, Edeth Prather was 19 years old and lived in Nottingham, Maryland with her father and mother. In 1910, Edith E. Grimes was 32 years old and lived in Nottingham, Maryland with her 2 daughters, father, mother, and brother. In 1920, Edith E. Grimes was 39 years old and lived in Washington, District of Columbia with her husband, Mordicai, son, 3 daughters, and mother. In 1930, Edith E. Grimes was 50 years old and lived in Washington, District of Columbia with her husband, Mordecai, 2 sons, and 2 daughters. Edith E. Grimes lived in Washington, District of Columbia in 1934. On April 1, 1940, Edith E. Grimes was 60 years old and lived in District Of Columbia County, District of Columbia with her husband, Mordecai, son, and daughter.

1918 WWI Card:   Mordecai:  First World War Draft Card; throat afflication then. Lived in Chellentham, PGC MD with wife Edie. Born July 7, 1876. Grey Hair. Dark Eyes, Med Build,but short height. Foreman for House of Reformation.

1930 Census for Washington DC, 11th St SE
Mordecai is the head of household and works as a custodian for the US government, he 54 years old and married at age 26 to Edith E. Grimes who does not work.  She is 50.  Children still in the home are Emma V. who is 22 and single.  Emma works as an office clerk.  Mordecai Jr is 19 and works in an electrical shop.  Mellica F. Grimes is 14 and Roy H. is 9.     Mordecai is a laborer for the L&C Treasury department in 1934 per the city directory.


1940 Census for Washington DC:  Residence 1111 E. Street SE, DC.  John was born in Maryland and is 64 in 1940.  His wife Edie is 60 and also a Marylander.  They lived in this same house in 1935.  With them are their daughter Melissa and son Roy H., both single and 24 and 20 respectively.

On Saturday, March 21, 1931 at 8:30 p.m. at the Emergency Hospital, Elizabeth Mangum Mitchell, beloved wife of Robert C. Mitchell and daughter of the late John R. and Mary E. Prather. Funeral from the residence of her son Kelly Mangum, 468 G street southwest on Wednesday, March 25 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited to attend.
