Levin Cator and wife Aney Robson CATOR,
son of  EDWARD & MARY LeCOMPTE CATOR
 (Cator Gen. Section 1)   

When Levin Cator was born on October 24, 1744, in Dorchester County, Maryland, his father, EDWARD, was 33 and his mother, Mary, was 33. He married Aney Robson and they had six children together in 15 years. He then married Jane Craigton on June 21, 1804, in Dorchester County.  He died on October 1, 1826, having lived a long life of 81 years, and was buried at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church in Taylors Island, MD.

Aney Robson was born in 1745 in Maryland, the child of JOHN and SARA. She married Levin Cator in 1767 in Maryland. She died in 1800 in Dorchester County at the age of 55.

On June 21, 1804 Levin married 2nd wife, JANE CRAIGTON  (Creighton) in Dorchester County.

  MOVED TO TENNESSEE

Moses born 1769 in Dorchester County.   By 1850 Moses and his family had moved to Williamson, TN and was now 81 years old. He is listed as a farmer still and having been born in Maryland.  The rest of the family was born in Tennessee. On the slave schedule for this year, he owned 12 slaves. Levin Cator, born 18 Oct 1770 in Dorchester County, MD.   He died in Williamson County, TN.

John Cator, born 1775 in Baltimore MD, which is where he also died.    He married Elizabeth Carpenter on 31 Dec 1803 according to the St. Mary's County records. No other information currently.

MAHALA CATOR b. 1782 Dorchester County, MD married ROGER C. ROBSON on Aug. 31, 1798 in same county.  At the age of 78 she passed away in this same county.

Abel Cator was born June 26, 1784 in Dorchester County, MD; died about. 1850.  He married Mary Travers  who was born about 1794 and died in Baltimore MD.  She (assumed with husband) was living in Baltimore at time of Abel's death in 1850.   In the September 9th 1850 Census for Dorchester County MD, Abel is listed as a 70 year old sailor; Mary as 56 years old (not employed).

Abel served in the War of 1812 in the 48th Reg of the 12th Brigade at the Battle of the Ice Mound.

"On February 7, 1815 in what will be the last known skirmish of the British in the Chesapeake, HM schooner Dauntless was off shore having sent her tender’s crew previously on James Island near the mouth of the Choptank River to raid livestock on nearby farms. On February 7 the Dauntless ships log recorded; “at daylight saw ourselves surrounded with ice and by 7 o’clock the ship was fast…Noon. Fine hard weather saw nothing of our boats…8 p.m. fresh breezes with severe frost the boats not having returned fear they are frozen in.”

Abel and Mary had a daughter Louisa Elizabeth Cator born about 1819 in MD.  Married Aaron P. Wallace Oct 27, 1846 in Dorchester, MD.  He was son of Joseph and Amelia Ross Wallace.  Aaron was born about 1806 in MD.  He died Feb 2, 1864.  Their children were Anthony R. Wallace and Anna Victoria Wallace.  Anna born October 16, 1847 and died Oct 26, 1928 in Dorchester Co.  She married Henry Mark Shenton. Henry was born March 13, 1839 and died Feb 14, 1905 in Dorchester Co.; both buried in  Grace P.E. Church Cemetery on Taylors Island.

Sgt. JOSEPH CATOR b. Apr 22 1778 Dorchester County, MD,  farmer, Democrat, and Episcopalian. He died Dec. 10, 1852 on Taylors Island, MD at the age of 74.   He married HANNAH BROHAWN, dau. of Capt. JOHN BROHAWN and MARY EDMONDSON, b. July 9, 1786. They married on March 29, 1805 in Dorchester County.  Hannah died about a year after her husband, on Sept. 19, 1853, in Dorchester County.  Both are buried at Grace P.E. Church Graveyard, on Taylors Island.  

It appears they lived in Baltimore at one time (?).  In the BALTIMORE MARYLAND: 1850 Census for Baltimore MD Ward 15:  Just 2-3 years before their deaths, he was 72 and she 66. Their sons William, Benjamin and Robinson were living in their household, as was their daughter Mary.  Also living with them were Mary B. Waters, Hannah Waters, William Waters and Charlotte Harrison. MARY ANN BROHAWN CATOR (1806 - 1872)

MARY ANN BROHAWN CATOR born January 25, 1806; died Feb. 28, 1872.  Married DR. JOSHUA "STEPHEN" WATTERS (WATERS) who was born Nov. 7, 1803 in Harford County, Maryland.  Joshua's mother, Betsy, died 1 week after his birth. Soon afterward, Joshua was adopted and educated by his Uncle and Aunt, Stephen and Polly Watters. TMary Ann and Stephen married on his birthday, Nov 7, in 1829.  Dr. Watters was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School and a physician of note in Dorchester County, traveling a professional medical circuit of 40 miles, until his death due to liver disease on May 27, 1840, in his late 30s.  He is buried at Grace Church Graveyard on Taylors Island, MD with his daughter (name unknown).

  • Dr. Stephen and Mary Ann's son William Joseph Henry Watters was b. July 15, 1834 in Dorchester County, MD.

  • Daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Mary Watters, born 1835 (?)

Widowed, Mary Ann moved to Baltimore with her son, age 6.  Son William Joseph Henry (JH) Watters went to sea about 1846 at the age of 12.  JH went to sea with his uncle, Capt. William Whitfield Cator, Master of the Bark, "Rainbow".  JH married Mary Louisa Nicodemus (date unknown). Mary Ann Brohawn Cator died Feb. 28, 1872.  Son JH died in 1906. JOHN E. ROBSON CATOR (1807 - 1837)

 JOHN E. ROBSON CATOR  b. Aug. 10, 1807 in same county. Married  ELIZABETH E. (LIZZIE) TOLLEY on Feb. 23, 1831.  John died on September 19, 1837 (age 30) in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, LA.  He is buried at Grace Cemetery on Taylors Island in Dorchester County, MD.  They had a son Edward Cator (1833-?); daughter Hannah C. G. Cator (1836-?) and daughter Jane Cator (1837-?)

JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR (1812 - 1898)

JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR b. 28 Apr. 1812 in Kingsville, Baltimore, MD.    On May 30 1836 Joseph Edmondson Cator married ELIZABETH JANE DOVE, who was about the same year as Joseph, but in Harford County, MD.  In the 1880 Census Joseph Edmondson Cator is living with his brother ROBINSON CATOR. JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR (1812 - 1898)

ELIZABETH ANN CATOR b. 01 Mar 1814; D. 29 Apr 1845 at age 29. On Dec 20th in 1835 Elizabeth married LEVI PAGAN, son of Henry Hooper Pagan and Kiziah Travers.  Levi was born Sept. 27, 1802, 12 years older than Elizabeth approximately.  In 1838 they has a son, WILLIAM HENRY PAGAN born in Dorchester County; died in Baltimore MD.  Levi Pagan died on Jan 20 1876. Elizabeth and her husband Levi had final services at Grace Church, Taylors Island, MD.  Levi’s Will is recorded at Dorchester County, MD as O-1128A.

SAMUEL BROHAWN CATOR b. 20 Mar 1816; D. 25 March 1840 when he was LOST AT SEA.  No known children.

Capt. WILLIAM WHITFIELD CATOR (1818 - 1840)

WILLIAM WHITFIELD CATOR, CAPT.,  b. 20 Mar 1818 (2 years to the day after Samuel; is this date correct?); d. Feb. 3, 1865.  He married Mary Ann Augusta Travers.  (For further info and children, see Generation Section #4 listed at the bottom of this page)

HANNAH JANE CATOR (1820 - 18__)

HANNAH JANE CATOR b. 1820, m. JACKSON DORNEY, of  Harford County MD,  who was born in 1817. During the 1870 Census Hannah is 50 and living in Baltimore's Ward 3 with Jackson, her husband, who is a 53 year old fisherman by trade.  They are listed in the 1890 Maryland Directory at 847 N. Mount, Baltimore.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CATOR b. Feb. 16, 1824, d. March 6, 1841, at 17 years of age at Port au Prince.  Buried or memorialized at Grace Cemetery in Dorchester County.

Never married to my knowledge.  She was born 1830.  No death date known.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CATOR (1830 -?)

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CATOR b. Feb. 10, 1824 (was he a twin to George Washington Cator?), d. January 4, 1872.  Married on 15 December 1851 to Sallie (Sarah Ann) McNamara of Lancaster County, Virginia b. Nov. 11, 1832.

Benjamin and Sallie had the following children:  Mary Josephine Cator (1852-1913); George Cator (1856-1932); Benjamin Jr. (1858-1888); Carrie Louisa Cator (1860-1935); Robinson W. Cator III (1863-1933); Grace Stewart Cator (1864-?)

1860 Census Baltimore City:  Benjamin age 35, merchant, owns an $8,000 home/personal property of $33,000. Wife, Sallie  is 26. Children in home are George(4), Josephine (7), and Benjamin (2).  Also living there are William Watters 25 (clerk) and Solomon Brown 21 (waiter). 

 

Son George Cator born in 1856.  He married  Mary J., born November 1852 in Maryland.   THIS IS THE GEORGE CATOR THAT DONATED THE CATOR PRINTS TO THE ENOCH PRATT LIBRARY!

1)  Benjamin F. Cator,
b. July 1885 Charlottesville VA (1900: 16 yrs, single)   On Ellis Island Records:  "Benjamin F. Cator, age 27, male, single born 1885 Charlottesville, VA and lives at 803 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD.  S.S. Bermudian; Sailing from Hamilton, Bermuda on 10/12/1912; arriving at Port of NY 10/14/1912."

 Grace L. Cator, b. April 1886 MD (1900: 14 yrs, single). 

George Cator received a PhD in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1902.  His dissertation can be found HERE.

GEORGE CATOR  1856-1932   
Who Was Who in America.  (Prominent businessman in Baltimore; responsible for establishment of Fidelity and Deposit Co. and the American Bonding Company.  He was interested in history and the 19th century.  He gave to the Enoch Pratt Library his collection of 200 prints and watercolors depicting Baltimore between 1752 and 1932. 

 

 

August 25, 1860 Baltimore, MD:  Daughter Carrie Louisa Cator born.  She married Dr. Herbert Harlan, a physician born in Harford County, MD May 7th, 1856; she died October 10, 1935.   He died August 16, 1923. Their wedding was held at Christ Church in Baltimore, where they both resided, on April 23, 1890.  Carrie was an Episcopalian.    Dr. Harlan’s education included:  A.B. from St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD in 1877, followed by his A.M. degree in 1878.  He graduated in medicine from the University of Maryland in 1879.  Then for two years (1879 and 1880) he practiced at hospitals in Paris and Vienna.  Beginning in 1881 he was a surgeon to the Presbyterian Eye and Ear Charity Hospital at Baltimore.  Dr. Harlan was also a demonstrator of human anatomy for the University of Maryland.  It is known that he resided in Baltimore in 1912, with the assumption that they had been living there for quite some time as a couple.
