1)  MOSES E. CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

Moses born 1768 in Dorchester County, MD to Levin and Aney Cator.  Moses married Lydia Howett on 17 July 1808 in Tyrell, NC.  He would have been 40 years old. 
  By 1850 Moses and his family had moved to Williamson, TN and was now 81 years old and likely a widow as the next person listed is 40 years younger. He is listed as a farmer still and having been born in Maryland.  The rest of the family was born in Tennessee. On the slave schedule for this year, he owns 12 slaves.

     2)  LEVIN CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

Levin Cator, born 18 Oct 1770 in Dorchester County, MD.  He was living in NY at the time of his father's Abel's death 1850.  He died in Williamson County, TN. 
   He married Ann Harvey (Harvy) in Tyrell County, NC on August 3, 1803.  He would have been 33 years old.

     3)  JOHN CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

John Cator, born 1775 in Baltimore MD, which is where he also died.    He married Elizabeth Carpenter on 31 Dec 1803 according to the St. Mary's County records.
No other information currently.

    4)  JOSEPH CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

DORCHESTER MARYLAND - 1778:  JOSEPH CATOR born April 22nd 1778 in Dorchester County, MD, worked as a farmer, was a Democrat, and an Episcopalian.  

DORCHESTER MARYLAND - 1786:  HANNAH BROHAWN, daughter of JOHN BROHAWN and MARY EDMONDSON, was born July 9, 1786. 

DORCHESTER MARYLAND - 1805:  Joseph's wife HANNER BRAGHAM/
HANNAH BROHAWN
wed him on March 29, 1805 in Dorchester County.

  • DORCHESTER MD 1804: John is born.

  • DORCHESTER MD 23 Feb 1831 Married ELIZABETH E. (LIZZIE) TOLLEY 

  • WASHINGTON, DC  1830 Census:  John age 39.

  • No known children.


DAUGHTER:  MARY ANN BROHAWN CATOR

  • Born January 25, 1806

  • Married 7 Nov 1829 Dr. STEPHEN  JOSHUA WATTERS who was born November 09, 1803 in Harford County, MD.   Dr. Watters was a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School and a physician of note in Dorchester County, traveling a professional medical circuit of 40 miles, until his death in 1840.  

  • Son born July 15, 1834 Dorchester County, Maryland
    William Joseph Henry Watters

  •  The doctor died on May 27, 1840 of liver disease; buried at Grace Church Graveyard on Taylors Island, MD, with his daughter (name unknown)

  • Widowed, Mary Ann moved to Baltimore with her son, age 6.

  • Son went to Sea about 1846 at age 12:    J. H. went to  sea with his uncle, Capt. W. W. Cator, Master of the Bark, "Rainbow". 

  • Son J.H. married Mary Louisa Nicodemus date unknown.

  • Mary Ann Brohawn Cator died February 28, 1872.

  • Son J.H. died 1906.

SON, JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR 

  • BALTIMORE, MD  April 28, 1812 JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR born.  Note:  Elizabeth Jane Dove also born this year in Harford County, MD. 

  • DORCHESTER COUNTY, MD 30 May 1836:  Marries Elizabeth Jane Dove of/in Harford County, MD.

  • BALTIMORE, MD1880 Census:  - Lives with brother Robinson Cator

  • 1898 JOSEPH EDMONDSON CATOR dies.

DAUGHTER, ELIZABETH A. CATOR

  • 1802 Sept. 27th:  Levi Pagan born to Henry Hooper Pagan and Kiziah Travers.

  • 1814 March 1st:  Elizabeth A. Cator born.

  • 1838:  Son William Pagan, born the Elizabeth A. Cator and Levi Pagan. No other information known(Note:  Later generations changed Pagan to Pagon)

  • 1845 April 29th:  Elizabeth Cator Pagan died. 

  • 1835 Dec. 20th:  Elizabeth Cator marries LEVI PAGAN

  • 1876 Jan. 20th:  Levi Pagan dies.

  • Both Elizabeth and her husband Levi had final services at Grace Church, Taylors Island, MD.  Levi’s Will is recorded at Dorchester County, MD as O-1128A.   

  SON, SAMUEL BROHAWN CATOR 
Born March 20, 1816; died March 25, 1840, Lost at Sea. No known children

 

CAPT WILLIAM WHITFIELD CATOR and wife, MARY ANN TRAVERS CATOR.

1818 March 20th MD: Wm. born.
1865 Feb. 3:  Wm. died.

Daughter, HANNAH JANE CATOR

  • 1820:  HANNAH JANE CATOR born.  1817:  Jackson Dorney born. Married JACKSON DORNEY of Harford County, MD;

  • 1870 Census:  Hannah is 50 and living in Baltimore (Ward 3) with husband who is a 53-year old fisherman by trade.  

  • 1890 Maryland Directory at 847 N. Mount, Baltimore, MD. 

  SON,  MOSES BROHAWN CATOR born 1822, died 1834, approximately 12 years of age.
 
SON, GEORGE WASHINGTON CATOR
born about 1824, died at approximately 19 years old in 1841 at 1841 Port au Prince

  • 1824 10 Feb 1824 Maryland:  BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CATOR born.

  • 1833 November:  SALLIE/SARAH McNAMARA born in Virginia.

  • 1851 Dec. 15th:   Marries SALLIE MCNAMARA. Per 1900 Census, they have 7 children - 4 of whom are living.

  • 1853:  Daughter Josephine Cator born in MD.

  • 1850 Census:  Benjamin working as clerk

  • May 1856 in MD:  Son George Cator born.  He married __/__/__ a Mary J., born November 1852 in Maryland.   THIS IS THE GEORGE CATOR THAT DONATED THE CATOR PRINTS TO THE ENOCH PRATT LIBRARY!!!

  • 1858 Maryland:  Son Benjamin Franklin Cator, Jr.  Age 2 in 1860 Baltimore Census.

  • 1860 Census BALTIMORE CITY:  Benjamin age 35, merchant, owns an $8,000 home/personal property of $33,000. Wife, Sallie  is 26. Children in home are George(4), Josephine (7), and Benjamin (2).  Also living there are William Watters 25 (clerk) and Solomon Brown 21 (waiter). 

  • 1869 Baltimore, MD:  Daughter Carrie Louisa Cator born.  She married Dr. Herbert Harlan, a physician born in Harford County, MD May 7th, 1856.  Their wedding was held at Christ Church in Baltimore, where they both resided, on April 23, 1890.  Carrie was an Episcopalian.    Dr. Harlan’s education included:  A.B. from St. John’s College, Annapolis, MD in 1877, followed by his A.M. degree in 1878.  He graduated in medicine from the University of Maryland in 1879.  Then for two years (1879 and 1880) he practiced at hospitals in Paris and Vienna.  Beginning in 1881 he was a surgeon to the Presbyterian Eye and Ear Charity Hospital at Baltimore.  Dr. Harlan was also a demonstrator of human anatomy for the University of Maryland.  It is known that he resided in Baltimore in 1912, with the assumption that they had been living there for quite some time as a couple. 
    Children of CARRIE LOUISA CATOR & DR. HERBERT HARLAN: 
    1)  MARGARET HERBERT HARLAN,
    b. 4/11/1893 in Baltimore.
    2)  SARAH CATOR HARLAN, b. 6/9/1894 in Baltimore. (No other known info.)

  • 1881 George admitted to Armstrong, Cator and Co. & withdrew 10 years later. 

  • Before 1890: BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CATOR dies.

  • 1890 Census:  GEORGE CATOR, retired merchant, living with his widowed mother, Sallie A. Cator (age 66; Sallie listed as Head of Household at 803 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD.), along with his wife and 2 children (and 3 servants):

    • Son Benjamin F. Cator, b. July 1885 Charlottesville VA (1900: 16 yrs, single)   On Ellis Island Records:  "Benjamin F. Cator, age 27, male, single born 1885 CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. and lives at 803 St. Paul St., Baltimore, MD.  S.S. Bermudian; Sailing from Hamilton, Bermuda on 10/12/1912; arriving at Port of NY 10/14/1912."

    • Daughter Grace L. Cator, b. April 1886 MD (1900: 14 yrs, single). 

  • 1920 Census BALTIMORE:  George living alone (with one servant) at 803 St. Paul St. in Baltimore. 

  • 1932 Baltimore:  George Cator dies.

New)  GEORGE CATOR  1856-1932   
Who Was Who in America.  (Prominent businessman in Baltimore; responsible for establishment of Fidelity and Deposit Co. and the American Bonding Company.  He was interested in history and the 19th century.  He gave to the Enoch Pratt Library his collection of 200 prints and watercolors depicting Baltimore between 1752 and 1932.

DAUGHTER, MARY C. CATOR
born 1830. 
Not known if lived to adulthood, married, or had children.

DORCHESTER MARYLAND: 1830 Census for District 4 lists a Jane Cator and a Joseph Cator:  
MALES  
JOSEPH lists of Males: 1 (5<)  3 (5 <10)  1 (10  <15) 2(15 <20)  2 (20 <30) 1 (50 <60) 
FEMALES
JOSEPH lists of Females: 
  1 (10  <15) 1 (15 <20)  1 (20 <30) 1 (50 <60) 

Jane Cator has 2 males (20 <30).
Jane Cator has 1 female  (5 <10),  1 female  (20 <30), and 1 female (herself?) (50 <60)

BALTIMORE MARYLAND: 1850 Census for Baltimore MD Ward 15:  Just 2-3 years before their deaths, he was 72 and she 66. Their sons William, Benjamin and Robinson were living in their household, as was their daughter Mary.  Also living with them were Mary B. Waters, Hannah Waters, William Waters and Charlotte Harrison.

DORCHESTER MARYLAND: 1852  JOSEPH CATOR died December 10th, 1852 Taylors Island, MD at the age of 74.  

DORCHESTER MARYLAND: 1853  JOSEPH CATOR'S WIFE, HANNAH BROHAWN CATOR  died September 19, 1853, in Dorchester County.

Joseph and Hannah Cator are buried at Grace P.E. Church Graveyard, on Taylors Island.

     5)  MAHALA CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

Mahala Cator married Roger C. Robson on August 28, 1789 in Dorchester County, MD.

 

   6)  ABEL CATOR (LEVIN2, EDWARD1) 

 

Abel Cator was born June 26, 1784 in Dorchester County, MD; died about. 1850.  He married Mary Travers  who was born about 1794 and died in Baltimore MD.  She (assumed with husband) was living in Baltimore at time of Abel's death in 1850.

  In the September 9th 1850 Census for Dorchester County MD, Abel is listed as a 70 year old sailor; Mary as 56 years old (not employed).

 

 

 

 

 

 

CHILDREN OF ABEL AND MARY TRAVERS CATOR:

 Louisa Elizabeth Cator, born about 1819 in Maryland. She married Aaron P. Wallace October 27, 1846 in Dorchester, MD, son of Joseph Wallace and Amelia Ross. Aaron was born about 1806 in Maryland, and died February 2nd, 1864.

Children of Louisa Cator and Aaron Wallace:

1)  Anthony R. Wallace.

2)  Anna Victoria Wallace, born October 16, 1847 and died Oct 26, 1928 in Dorchester Co.  She married Henry Mark Shenton. Henry was born March 13, 1839 and died Feb 14, 1905 in Dorchester Co. Both are buried in the Grace P.E. Church Cemetery on Taylor's Island.
