Morgantown Boys in
Amateur Ring Show at Local Armory
Several
new faces will appear on the weekly A.A.U. boxing program at the armory Friday
night when a team of five scrappy amateur millers from the John Zan Athletic
Club of Morgantown invade for an inter-city match.
Fighters
from the John Zan stables are noted throughout the tristate area for their
willingness to mix it up and for their clean sportsmanship.
Zan’s club. located not far from West Virginia University, is used by
many Mountaineer boxers for training sessions.
Zan has produced some good ring men in the years he has operated his
club. It will be recalled that Scottie Riffle, who put big John
Chancey to sleep here a few weeks ago, and has since turned pro, fought under
Zan’s colors.
Mucklow
Faces Rogers
In
addition to the five inter-city fights, three other attractive matches will
round out the scheduled eight-bout program.
Outstanding among the three added bouts is the semi-final between Bill
Mucklow, Kanawha College welterweight star, and Johnny Rogers, scrappy Oak Hill
high school athlete. Both boys won
their bouts last week in impressive fashion.
Mucklow gaining a decisive victory over Paul Shultz, and Rogers winning
over Paul Woods. However, Rogers
holds a previous decision over Mucklow from the Golden Glove regionals staged in
Huntington last February and the blonde collegian is out to avenge that defeat.
The
complete lineup of eight bouts follows: Andrews
(Tarzan) Roy, Charleston, vs. Frankie Wills, Morgantown,
welterweights; Bill Mucklow, Kanawha College vs. Johnny Rogers, Oak Hill,
welterweights; James Davis, Charleston, vs. Pete Barton, Morgantown,
middleweights.

last week’s show was declared one of the best ever staged here.
Matchmakers are making plans to accommodate a capacity crowd.
